| When Gene Krupa made his first records as a big band leader in 1938 he could not have foreseen that he was to remain with the same record company for more than ten years. Columbia (and its subsidiary labels) had no reason to drop an artist who contributed hugely the company's commercial success. But like most big bands, Gene Krupa also fought an uphill struggle against the changing musical taste of his fans in the late forties. RCA Victor still believed in Krupa's potential and signed him up in 1949. Volume 15 of the complete recordings of Gene Krupa and his Orchestra presented in chronological order, opens with his last session for Columbia. Dolores Hawkins successfully emulates Anita O'Day's style and Roy Eldridge is on his usual terrific form. The somewhat bizarre "Swiss Lullaby" opens rather chaotically but then swings like mad, with an impressively powerful solo from Eldridge. In a contemporary review, critic Barry Ulanov described "Swiss Lullaby" as "one of the genuinely important records of the year". | |||
